At the 39th Annual Golden Globes ceremonies held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, "The Jazz Singer" is recognized with three nominations:
  • Best Actor in a Leading Role (Neil Diamond)
  • Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lucie Arnaz)
  • Best Original Song ("Love on the Rocks" - Music and Lyrics by Neil Diamond and Gilbert Becaud)

Paramount Pictures releases "The Jazz Singer" videocassette.

Neil goes on a brief tour of the Western United States, beginning in Tempe, Arizona. This tour marks the addition of Ron Tutt as Neil's new drummer, replacing Dennis St. John.

1982
Neil collaborates with Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer-Sager to compose "Heartlight." The inspiration for "Heartlight" came when the three collaborators, all friends, went to see the hit movie of the year, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial."
