"Follow that!" If there are two words that will haunt Neil Diamond to the grave, it'll probably be the ones he was said to have directed at Bob Dylan as Diamond walked offstage at the Band's legendary 1976 farewell show the Last Waltz. That the episode has assumed such notoriety speaks volumes about the way music fans once perceived Diamond. What he lacked in self-awareness, he appeared to make up for in self-regard....

Super-producer Rick Rubin kickstarted Johnny Cash's late-era comeback by pairing him with some red-hot source material and session players that included everyone from Tom Petty to Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
For Neil Diamond's surprise 2005 turn, 12 Songs, Rubin let the Brooklyn bard speak for himself. The results were no less authentic. 12 Songs wasn't nearly as dramatic as Cash's star turns with Rubin, but the outing was a fine showcase for Diamond's tough-love songs, which on recent recordings had begun to become parodies of themselves....

Aiken may sing through gritted teeth, but Diamond, who found himself similarly adrift in schlock during his post-"Jazz Singer" years, always seemed to enjoy himself immensely. At least until he met producer Rick Rubin, who rescued Diamond from his rhinestone leisure-suited purgatory more than a decade after working similar magic on Johnny Cash....
