hope of any shows this year. I watched The Jazz Singer and HAN-NY last nite, trying to shake the mood. All it does though is just make you want more. Vegas would give us more, but on Vegas terms. Which we may all have to accept. Neil did say this would be the best year yet. And he usually pulls it off. I am hopeful again.

It's the opposite of what he's always said about wanting to take his show to people's hometowns. But, with the new quote they have in that article, it sounds like he may have changed his tune.
You know, I woke up this morning wondering what news angle they were going to use to push the NYC CD this week. Never saw this coming, though.
I never thought Neil was too happy with Vegas crowds. But I'm sure staying still in one venue is a whole lot easier than traveling the world.
If it makes him happy, that's what's important. But it makes me very sad.

I thought he said something then about his neighbors in New York. Part of the touring fun for me is the different cities and people. And of course getting to the shows. But we all are getting older, and it is about the music. Neil may just be testing the waters. Do a few months in Vegas and a few shows on the road. Mix things up a bit. See where it takes him.

As unlikely as it seems, Las Vegas is SOMEBODY'S home town. I'm sure they'd like Neil to come there, too. But a long-run engagement stuck in one place? There has to be an awful lot of thought behind a decision like that. If it DOES happen, I know where my vacation will be!

but I actually would like to see Neil in Vegas. I've not been there and what a better way to see the town for the first time. I know a lot of us travel all over the place to attend his shows and I'll just bet that a lot of us would get together in Vegas for his shows. Tickets MIGHT be easier to get. There would be lots to do before/after the show. If he were to be there for an extended period of time one could pick the dates that you would see him, not the other way around. I'm thinking it would be a smaller venue? More intimate. Hell yea, I'll go.

Neil's management team have been toying around with Australian promoters for the last three months, always promising but never delivering. If this is a matter of hedging bets so they could see if Las Vegas pans out I am sorry to say this but we will not be seeing Neil Down Under for a very long time if ever again.
I know two promoters that are sick of the game playing and I'm pretty sure it would be enough for both of them to pull out of negotiations.
I hope it's not true

I don't know if a long-term deal in Vegas is something I would like for Neil but for the short term, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's better than not seeing Neil at all. For me, airfare to Vegas is very reasonable - I'm ready to go!

1) He's in good health.
2) He's not planning on giving up performing for us anytime soon.
3) This will be much easier on him and his band who have spent many, many nights, weeks, weekends and months on end away from their families, loved ones and friends in order to bring the music TO US.
Although I am most thrilled that he's feeling great enough to make such a long-term commitment of this sort; personally, I can't find anything positive in this decision of his for me.

But I'm curious as to what you said about it being diehard fans and not people there to gamble who are just given complimentary tickets. How do you know that? Is it the venue? Because my first thought was about the time Neil got so annoyed about the people in the front not paying attention in Vegas that he told the ushers to go get him some live people to sit in the front.

Tickets, lodging, meals and airfare to Vegas. (Lodging could very well be in the same building as the theater.) Tickets, lodging, meals and airfare to some other place in the world. Is one REALLY more expensive than the other? I'd love a chance to see Neil in Las Vegas. He wouldn't have to worry about a live body in the front row, either.

the big name artists are now, then the owners hold back the best seats to give as freebies to their best customers. These people usually dress the part. They are not typically your rock and rollers. Just the way Vegas works.
Years ago, you had to tip the help big time to get a decent seat, in the smaller theaters. That is gone now with the new venues. Now you have a seat number but are paying almost twice more than a city owned venue. When I checked on Celion tickets a few years ago, when she first was playing veges, long term, most tickets were sold out and they were $200-300 plus. When Neil was only $70 or so. Also, you use to be able to wait in line for tickets to be released from the casino at the last minute. And get a great seat if you got lucky.
Will be interesting to see how the ticket game will work. It will be more expensive to matter what.

Neil in Vegas Posted by designerswan

I have lived in Vegas for many years and, frankly, I am tired of hearing people "diss" this town. The Vegas of today is NOT the cheesy Vegas of years ago -- we have first-class restaurants and shopping as well as entertainment. The venue at Caesars is beautiful -- and far more "intimate" than the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Add that to the opportunity to be able to pick the best day to see an on-going show and this is a win-win-win situation for Neil, his fans, and the city, which has attractions galore and fairly good weather most of the year.
The problem at the MGM was that the company owns a number of resorts on the Strip and, therefore, a lot of tickets were given to high rollers who simply wanted to see a show. After the last show here, Neil was thrilled with the audience reaction (said it was the nearest thing to other shows on the road that he had seen -- and I got that info from a VERY reliable source within his organization). Caesars is owned by Harrah's Entertainment, which doesn't have as many Vegas properties, which will make tickets easier to get (personally, I would have loved to see Neil at the Pearl, the theatre at the Palms, which is beautiful and intimate -- no seat is farther than 120 feet away from the stage). Tickets probably won't be cheap -- in the $100 and up range (but that is, unfortunately, typical for Vegas now).
People from around the globe come to Vegas; Neil has never been to the Orient or to Africa or to a gazillion other places, and this would give those fans the opportunity to see him (I met two Japanese girls who were thrilled that Neil was in concert in Vegas -- but they were unable to get tickets as the concert was for only for one night). And, a limited engagement would definitely save on wear and tear on Neil, the band, and equipment (which is extremely costly to move from place to place -- I remember seeing several huge trucks behind the MGM Grand Garden Arena on one of his visits here). Neil and the band would have wonderful accommodations if they stayed here -- and they could be home in an hour or so if they decided to go home every night (Barry Manilow did that, flying home to Palm Springs after his engagements at the Hilton; he will be back at the Paris Las Vegas in March, by the way).
I think this is a great move for Neil and I think you naysayers are going to be pleasantly surprised (critics be damned -- it has never been about the critics...it has always been about what makes Neil and his fans happy). This is exciting news for all of us in the "City of Sin" -- Neil coming here is a much-needed boost for Vegas' struggling economy...and I'm sure that all of you who can put the "cheese" mentality to rest will have a wonderful time here. Hugs from Vegas, Donna

The theatre seats about 4000 and is a very nice setting; no charge for parking; if you gamble with Harrah's you can start building up your comps for tickets; after the initial run tickets should not be impossible to get, just plan ahead. Also the mafia no longer runs the town so ND won't have to worry about that LOL.

I see it as a happy medium for Neil (even as much as I despise the very idea of the current family friendly, sanitized, Disney-esque Vegas!); he can still perform to adoring fans on a regular basis, without the drudgery and exhaustion of touring. Neil has given and given and given to his fans for over 4 decades (not to mention most of the band as well!)....he deserves the luxury of slowing down. We should be thankful he's not retiring completely. Neil may very well be the 1st reason I've ever had to visit Las Vegas! Side note-I hadn't seen the Christmas Party video..all I can say is Neil is just about the most generous star out there and, a total class act!

Touring Posted by designerswan
2010-02-08 15:11:37.0
70.173.143.102
Other acts have played here and toured as well. Neil would be a "rotating headliner" -- play a few weeks each year and have time off in between to tour, record, visit my house, etc. (Elton John played his intermittent gigs at Caesars for five years and continued to make personal appearances around the world between appearances). Garth Brooks is currently headlining at Encore for several weekends a year (Steve Wynn snagged him by offering a private jet to fly Garth home after his weekend gigs) -- he won't go on tour for at least five years, so this may be some people's only chance to see him.
Money can be a big draw for performers (especially those with large fan bases) -- Celine Dion, for example, grossed over $400 million in her five years at Caesars. Five years seems to be the "norm," by the way -- although some performers signed three-year contracts initally, they extended their runs to five years, which must mean they enjoyed their Vegas concerts. Tickets for rotating headliners have been running from $95 to $250 (for Cher), and a benefit is that you can buy tickets in person at the box office. Am looking forward to seeing official word soon. Hugs, Donna
P.S. I was not singling any one person out for "dissing" Vegas -- our city, like any other, has its good points and its drawbacks (I am NOT a big fan of the traffic). Millions of visitors a year can't all be wrong -- and I thank them for coming...and leaving some cash here so I can continue to enjoy having no state income tax. D.

I was there before all those big hotel/casino/resorts were built, and I've been there after they were built. And, as I'm typing this post, I can't wait to go back to Vegas. I stayed at Caesar's once and loved it! I've stayed in 4 other hotels, too. I definitely don't want Neil to perform there all the time, and I'm wondering if he's being pressured by his management people to do this type of show. Only time will tell what will happen. Would be a very poor choice in my view and a real career downer. God, he doesn't need the money. I would rather Neil not tour at all than sell out to the fat cats at AEG. Why put yourself in the same time zone as rubbish like Celine or worn out nostalgia acts like Cher? Elton has done nothing worthwhile for around 200 years and don't start me on Manilow. Neil should be sparring with the likes of Springsteen and Dylan etc. Not a load of clapped out, uninspirational rubbish. Guess we should have seen the signs with the last Christmas Album. Having put himself back on a pedestal, if this dangerous rumour is true, then he will knock himself straight back off it. I will keep my overdraft intact thanks.

Wouldn't that be more satisfying than ending his career as a glittery human juke box being laughed at by critics ? He will play into every stereotype people ever had about him. Critics always sneered that he was a vegas act even though up until recent years he never played vegas. Now he wants to finish his career as one ? If these rumors are true I think that it's very sad.

Personally, the drive isn't bad. I don't want to disrepect the city or its residents, but I have never cared for the concept of Vegas - I am not in favor of gambling and I have never liked the whole idea of "What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas." I would likely go once and that would be it. I may eat my words, who knows...I do understand it offers certain advantages to both Neil and his staff. So, again, if it makes Neil happy, he needs to do that.
I'm not going to worry about it until we hear more. At least I'm going to try not to worry!

It could be a way to call his own shots on ticket prices. I'll be honest. I don't want to see Neil do a Vegas room that I understand he has hated the thought of doing for a lot of years, but I am NOT looking forward to fighting with my computer and every scalper in the world on Ticket "go on sale" day. It's a huge turn off for me. Not to mention time-consuming. And I'm not sure how much time I have left! Furthermore, I am NOT interested in sitting in the back of an auditorium anymore. It had its day, and I gladly drank that koolaid. But I can barely see this page to type this message. I am not paying $$$$$$ to see a tiny speck of a shiny shirt, when the music's already in my head and my heart.

have to say though I am of the same mind. I agree whole-heartedly with you and Lois. This is not what Neil's about, it has come like a bolt out of the blue and I really hope it's not true.

Richard well said, I can understand Elt doing Vegas, he needs the dosh because he is spent out, both as a performer and a person, and I have all of his albums going back to the start, so was a fan but now because the last few albums have been awful, because he charges £100 a ticket when touring the UK, I am afraid for me he is ripping off the fans. Neil does not need Vegas, doesn't need the money as far as we know, so why would he do it? For me it just doesn't add up, this year will be taken up with the album, then the promotional work, where does Vegas fit in? Unless there is to be one last world tour and then he may consider this. For me Neil NOOOOOOOOO, should be concentrating on writing and setting more world attendance records and competing with the Boss!
NEIL DO NOT DO IT, WHAT A WASTE!

so we are set to go, I won't have to call my mother!
Neil knows what he is doing and it is his decision. I would not imagine he has to work so it is a blessing to us that he will still perform for us somewhere in my opinion.
I have never been to Vegas and I think it is time I go. Some of the biggest entertainers have performed there off and on for years. I don't think it has hurt them at all. There is a time and place for everything. Neil also has a right to change his mind about things he said many years ago in my opinion. It is such a shame many hold Neil accountable for each and every word he said no matter how long ago. In my opinion, things change, people change, circumstances change and we all have the right to change our decisions especially from years ago. Just my opinion though.

I too was / is an Elton fan. In fact the first album I bought that wasn't an ND release was Don't Shoot Me, then caught up with Honky Chateau, Madman, then onto Caribou, Captain Fantastic etc. Some wonderful stuff with Bernie Taupin. Saw Elt too live at the old Hammersmith Odeon one Christmas Eve (live on BBC 2). He went off the rails a bit afterwards, but I still purchased the albums. But today he is seriously washed up, so where else can you earn a buck - Vegas of course! The problem is ND isn't washed up!

Yes some wonderful albums there from Elt, and agree thats where Elt can earn big bucks. He hasn't released a decent album for a number of years now, wheras ND has remerged as one of the true legends of singer songwriter's with the last two RR produced albums. he is probably writing and recording some of his best stuff for decades, is receiving accolades from all the right places, and I am particulary looking forward to the next album as I believe it will send him in another direction. Vegas would instantly put a damper on this and send him back to the 80/90's when he was seen as a once great s/s of the 70's but had turned into a vegas act. Neil could cut back the touring, I don't want to see him going through the motions in say 5 yrs time when he probably should have stopped touring and just concentrate on writing, but for the next 2 - 3 years I think he could continue along with McCartney, Dylan etc do maybe a couple of tours but then wind down gracefully. I for one would think Neil knows this and seriously hope those rumours are unfounded regarding Vegas, as I say I can't see where it would fit in in any case, can you?

Vegas is not fan-friendly. I've seen ND shows there a couple of times, one of which was my worst concert experience. However, a 4,000-seat venue would definitely be better than the rafters at the MGM Grande. Whatever he does, I will do my best to see him.
