Thinking about Shilo777's sensitive post re Neil's music
Posted by Pollyanna 2005-11-17 22:58:30.0

and the power it has to transport us to another place if only temporarily... Some songs are unfailingly uplifting, I can almost always count on a smile (particularly the earlier upbeat ones); some songs bring out your deeper emotion or pain & you shed a tear or two. I've been consoled by & commisserated with Neil's songs, as I think so many of us here have. My husband (as I have mentioned before) has a progressive degenerative brain disease, similar to Alzheimer's, that declines & plateaus. He was an absolutely brilliant physician; the fact that his brain is deteriorating is beyond ironic. He cannot tell me who the president is or what year it is, but last night in the car he sang every word of I Am I Said. Talk about choking back tears! And I thought of all of our online family here & how so many have dealt with or are currently dealing with health problems, heartaches & various struggles. And Neil's music has been a therapeutic common thread for all of us. Do you think he has any real sense of the impact he has had in so many lives? Just like Shilo777, lifting her out of her situation for that two hours of happiness. I think that even if he did not write every song to be "profound", for so many of us they connect to us in a profound way. And I am profoundly grateful, for a lifeline of music, and a lifeline of Neil friends. Please forgive my rambling post, the car singing has stayed with me!

story and a wonderful memory created!
I cannot think of any singer/songwriter who has touched so many for so long in so many different ways

Neil's concerts are like being in a safe and happy cocoon for two hours. We are all fortunate to "get" Neil and receive the respite he can provide. And yes, his work often makes me smile, how can you help it with Porcupine Pie! Thank you Pollyanna and Shilo777 for your posts. I wish you both well with the challenges you are facing.

Oh Deb, reading about Bob singing

made tears come to my eyes, so I can imagine how you must feel. His doctors would no doubt disagree, but I think as Bob was singing IAIS the music wasn't in his brain...it was in his heart and just came pouring out.

What a beautiful, heart-felt post! Thanks for sharing!! nt

They mean more than I can express. And Glo, what a beautiful & comforting idea about the music coming from Bob's heart! It gave me a lump in my throat -- thank you all so much!
